FRANCESCO ZURLINI ( Rome July 12, 1969 ).

Artist's Statement

Francesco Zurlini lives and works between Bologna, Italy and Newport beach , California. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Bologna, Rome, Siena, Florence, Genga, Strasbourg, Laguna Beach, Los Angeles and San Francisco. His works have been published several times on Architectural Digest magazine.

Ever since I was a child I loved abstract art. Everything was extremely natural. When you're a child, you like things or you don't and informal art immediately fascinated me. I was a kid when I had the fortune and privilege of observing the work of Afro Basaldella, one of the greatest exponents of italian abstract art, who, a friend of my father, moved in with us for a month in the summer at Forte dei Marmi. There he worked and it is there, during that summer, that painting was shown to me, was revealed as a mysterious alchemy of materials, gestures, expectation, smells and moods . I felt the " need " to submit to art's fascinating ritual, I had made my choice. Inside my works there isn't attempt to organize it into any representative framework, no claim to copy objective reality or imitate anything as figures, landscapes or recognizable forms. The painting is characterized by a strict sense of color and composition, from the attention to detail and harmony of imperfections.

I can be fascinated by anything, an object, a sign on a wall, geometric figures, masterpieces of the past, but some forms observed won't come back. They will end up in the most hidden corners of the mind and they remain there, forgotten; others reemerge suddenly, even after a long time, because they struck you. This is what a painting can spring from; I can trust the instinct of the moment, my rigorous sense of aesthetics, or at the same time re-elaborate certain forms that have gone straight to my imagination. Even coincidence sometime can contribute, and a simple accidental drip on the canvas, in moving the brush towards the paint can open up a universe.
